"East Indians" in general, and Sikhs, in particular, had been engaged in long and unending struggles with the regimes of their countries of abode over various issues, including the right to a dignified life, the right to vote, and the right to wear a turban at their workplace.
A major battle was won in 1993 when a turbaned Sikh entered the House of Commons. For the first time, a turbaned Sikh had been elected to a Parliament outside India.
