The critically acclaimed thriller Santosh, which was The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA)-nominated and shortlisted for an Oscar, will be released in more US cities on Jan.31. Earlier, screenings of the film were held in New York and Los Angeles. Back home, the film has been denied release in India.
Set in rural Northern India, Santosh follows the gripping journey of a young widow, Santosh, who inherits her late husband's job as a police constable. As she investigates the brutal murder of a low-caste girl, she becomes entangled in a complex web of crime and corruption, forcing her to confront both the flaws of the system and her own role within it.
The film marks the feature debut of British-Indian writer-director Sandhya Suri, who crafts a compelling narrative of moral dilemmas and societal struggles.
Starring Shahana Goswami as Santosh and Sunita Rajwar as a commanding older female inspector, Santosh has received critical acclaim since its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. Variety hailed it as a "whip-smart film" and praised its fierce feminist undertones, calling it a "fiercely feminist empowerment saga."
After its initial screenings in New York and Los Angeles, Santosh will open in additional US cities on Jan.31, offering audiences the opportunity to experience its powerful storytelling and social commentary. The cities include Atlanta, Austin, Charlottesville, VA Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Fremont, Flint, Indianapolis, Memphis, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, and West Palm Beach.
The film’s absence from Indian theaters has sparked significant discussion, with many questioning the restrictions placed on its release. Despite this, Santosh continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, offering a timely exploration of gender, power, and justice.
