A film made by Chidanand Naik, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, has won the La Cinef Award for Best Short at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France. Naik’s project titled, Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know, was announced the official winner on May.23 at the festival.

The film is directed by Naik, shot by Suraj Thakur, edited by Manoj V, with sound by Abhishek Kadam.

The recognition is a historic moment for Indian cinema. Indian films have been garnering accolades on the international stage, with FTII performing remarkably well at Cannes in recent years, showcasing several student films. The current recognition comes four years after another FTII student film 'CATDOG' won an award at the 73rd Cannes.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival featured multiple entries from India across various categories. Many FTII alumni, including Payal Kapadia, Maisam Ali, Santosh Sivan, Chidanand S Naik, and his team, received recognition at this year's festival.

"Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know” tells the story of an elderly woman who steals the village's rooster, causing chaos in the community. To retrieve the rooster, a prophecy is invoked, leading to the exile of the old lady's family.

Prior to joining FTII in 2022, Naik was also chosen as one of the 75 Creative Minds at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), an initiative by the Ministry of I&B to recognize and support emerging young artists in cinema.

'La Cinef' is an official section of the festival designed to promote emerging talents and highlight films from film schools worldwide. The film was chosen from a pool of 2,263 submissions from 555 film schools globally, comprising 18 shorts (14 live-action and 4 animated films).
