The Film Federation of India (FFI) on Sept. 23, announced Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

Kiran Rao's satirical comedy-drama was chosen from a pool of 29 contenders, including ‘Animal’, ‘Sam Bahadur’, and ‘Article 370’.

Produced by Aamir Khan Productions in collaboration with Jio Studios and Kindling Pictures, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ tells the humorous and insightful tale of a young man whose bride is accidentally swapped with another, shedding light on gender roles and the complexities of patriarchal society. Released in theaters in March 2024 and currently streaming on Netflix, the film stars Sparsh Srivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan.

In a statement, Aamir Khan Productions expressed their gratitude to the FFI for selecting the film to represent India at the Oscars. “Heartfelt thanks to the Film Federation of India selection committee for choosing our film Laapataa Ladies to represent India at the Oscars! We are immensely grateful to our audiences, the media, and the film fraternity for their overwhelming love and support for Laapataa Ladies. Thank you to Jio Studios and Netflix for their strong support," the statement read.

Director Kiran Rao, whose debut film ‘Dhobi Ghat’ received critical acclaim in 2011, said she is honored by the recognition. “I am deeply honoured and delighted that our film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Cinema has always been a powerful medium to connect hearts, transcend boundaries, and ignite meaningful conversations. I hope that this film will resonate with audiences across the world, just as it has in India,” Rao said.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and has been praised for its sharp social satire on patriarchy. The FFI jury described the film as one that captures the diversity of Indian women and their dual roles in society, blending humor and social commentary.
