Reflecting on Dr Mehta’s journey, she spoke about how power and purpose, both of the mind and life shaped her vision and brought deeper meaning to her endeavors. She underscored how Dr. Mehta's legacy continues to inspire women across the world.
The event celebrated the rising influence of women in emerging economies, showcasing their transformative impact on the global stage. Distinguished speakers included the Permanent Representatives of Qatar, Malawi, and the Netherlands—Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, Agnes Mary Chimbiri Molande, and Lise Gregoire-van Haaren, respectively. They shared personal experiences and insights on women's leadership, both within the United Nations and in their respective countries.
The Dr. Hansa Mehta Memorial Lecture pays tribute to the freedom fighter, educationist, and reformer who played a pivotal role in advancing gender equality. Dr. Mehta is best known for changing the phrase "All men are born free and equal" to "All human beings are born free and equal" in Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, marking a historic milestone for women's rights.
Instituted to coincide with International Women’s Day, the lecture continues to honor Dr. Mehta’s enduring legacy in advocating for women’s empowerment and inclusive diplomacy.
