The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) chapters in New York and Manhattan collaborated with the Indian American Kerala Center in Elmont, New York, and several other community organizations to host a farewell dinner for AK Vijayakrishnan. Vijayakrishnan worked as the Consul for Community Affairs at the Indian Consulate in New York for four-and-a-half years.

The participating organizations included the Kerala Cultural Association of North America, Pioneer Club of Keralites, Kerala Samajam of Greater New York, World Malayalee Council NY Province, FOMAA Metro Region, FOKANA Metro Region, Long Island Malayalee Cultural Association, Indian American Malayalee Association of Long Island, and Milan Cultural Association.

Consul Vijayakrishnan, a senior diplomat with the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, has over 36 years of experience in various interesting and challenging assignments, including previous postings at the High Commission of India in Pakistan and other countries, as well as different sections of the Ministry.

As Vijayakrishnan was retiring from service, a send-off dinner was held at the Indian American Kerala Center.

GOPIO International Chairman Dr Thomas Abraham remarked that while many consuls come and go, the community organizations chose to give Consul Vijayakrishnan a proper send-off for his contributions to the diaspora.

Vijayakrishnan was even presented with an honor plaque by these organizations in recognition of his sincere service to the Indian diaspora community.

Vijayakrishnan expressed that he thoroughly enjoyed working for the benefit of the Indian-American community. He mentioned that he encountered numerous family disputes, including instances of domestic violence, and suggested that the community should always pursue non-violence in resolving any conflicts.

Vijayakrishnan shared that he had attended many regional community festivals and suggested that community organizations invite members from other Indian community groups to these events. He believed that this practice would foster better understanding and knowledge of Indian festivals across all communities.

The Consul for Visa at the Indian Consulate Pragya Singh will have the additional charge of Consul for Community Affairs after Vijayakrishnan’s exit. Singh said at the meeting that she would continue the work of Vijayakrishnan and sought community support.
