Australian MP wants October recognized as Hindu Heritage Month
The suggestion comes from recognition of the fact that influence of immigrant Indians is growing in Australia.

Andrew Charlton, an Australian parliamentarian, has asserted that dedicating October as Hindu Heritage Month will celebrate the rich cultural heritage and spiritual traditions of Hinduism, which has become one of the fastest-growing religions in the country.
Charlton addressed parliament on the issue: "In the last few decades, the whole of Australia has fallen in love with Diwali... People celebrate Diwali as one of the most joyous events of the year... Diwali is a recognition of fundamental values. Values of positivity, unity, generosity, success, and coming together as a community." He added, "Today is a good opportunity to recognize the importance if Diwali in the Australian annual calendar. I like the suggestion of the Hindu Council to recognize the month of October as the Hindu Heritage Month."
With a Hindu population exceeding 684,000, as per the 2021 census, Hinduism has emerged as the third-largest religion in Australia. This substantial growth, primarily driven by immigration from India and other Hindu-majority countries, has enriched the nation's cultural tapestry.
A Month of Celebrations
October, a month brimming with vibrant Hindu festivals, provides the perfect backdrop for this recognition. Key festivals celebrated during this period include:
- Navaratri: A nine-day festival dedicated to the divine feminine, celebrated with intricate dance forms, fasting, and prayers.
- Dussehra: A festival that commemorates the victory of good over evil, often celebrated with grand processions and effigy burning.
- Diwali: The festival of lights, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, celebrated with illuminated homes, fireworks, and the exchange of gifts.
Fostering Intercultural Understanding
By designating October as Hindu Heritage Month, the member of parliament feels the following can be achieved:
- Acknowledge the significant contributions of Hindu Australians to the nation's economy, healthcare, education, and technology sectors.
- Foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hindu traditions, customs, and values among the broader Australian community.
- Encourage interfaith dialogue and promote harmony among different religious and cultural groups.
The Hindu Council of Australia has welcomed the suggestion as the recognition will be a testament to the growing visibility and acceptance of Hinduism in Australia. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the rich Indian heritage and contribute to the multicultural tapestry of Australia.
