Former Indian captain and spin legend Bishan Singh Bedi passes away
Bedi took over as the captain of the Indian team in 1976, succeeding Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

Former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on October 23, 2023, at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness. The former captain of the Indian men's cricket team, according to media reports, underwent numerous medical procedures, including a knee surgery approximately one month ago. He is survived by his wife Anju, and two children, Neha and Angad.
Mourning the death of Bedi, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) tweeted on X, saying, "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fans in these tough times. May his soul rest in peace."
Saddened by the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the passing of noted cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi. His passion for the sport was unwavering and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories. He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."
Bedi, primarily a slow left-arm orthodox bowler, hailed from Amritsar, Punjab. Born in September 1946, he played test matches for India between 1966 and 1979; a total of 67 test matches and took 266 wickets. He made his debut against the West Indies in 1966 and played his last test against England at The Oval in 1979.
Bedi took over as the captain of the Indian team in 1976, succeeding Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. He was then replaced by Sunil Gavaskar. He held the world record for the most economical bowling figures in a 60-over ODI match amongst the bowlers who had completed their quota of overs (12 overs). He is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award (1970) and CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award (2004).
