Gatka Federation USA to host 2nd National Gatka Championship in New York
The primary objective of the championship is to unite Gatka players, coaches, referees, and judges under one platform.

Gatka Federation USA, the umbrella organization dedicated to managing, standardizing, promoting, and popularizing the Sikh martial art of Gatka across the United States, will host its 2nd National Gatka Championship on Sep. 28, 2024.
The event will be held at The Sikh Center of New York Inc., under the aegis of the World Gatka Federation (WGF), an international body dedicated to preserving and promoting Gatka.
In preparation for the event, the management committee of the Sikh Center has unveiled the official poster for the championship. Gurinder Singh Khalsa, chairman, and Dr. Deep Singh, general secretary of Gatka Federation USA, shared that this will be the second national championship organized by the federation.
Over the past year, the organization has actively conducted Gatka training camps in various states across the country, collaborating with gurdwara committees, educational institutions, and other sports organizations. Gatka Federation USA is also working to strengthen its state chapters, forming State Gatka Associations to coordinate the participation of players from across the nation.
Kalvinder Singh Fresno, president of Gatka Federation USA, announced that the championship would be dedicated to the memory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, the first Sikh general who established the Sikh Empire. He further explained that the championship will feature both competitive fights and demonstration events, including the under-14 demonstration and combat matches for under-17 and under-21 age groups.
Competitions will take place in both men’s and women’s categories, with a focus on the Single-Soti individual events. The primary objective of the championship is to unite Gatka players, coaches, referees, and judges under one platform, providing them with the opportunity to prepare for future national and international tournaments.
Daler Singh, president of the Baba Makhan Shah Lobana Sikh Center, Bhai Gagandeep Singh from the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society of New York, and Jaskirat Singh, joint secretary of the New York Gatka Association, emphasized that the goal of the event is to spread awareness about the Sikh martial art and introduce the younger generation to the rich cultural heritage of Gatka.
Also present at the announcement were Sarabjit Kaur, finance secretary of Gatka Federation USA, Sarabjit Kaur of Westchester County, and senior coaches Sujan Singh and Baljinder Singh Banwait from New York.
The Gatka Federation USA looks forward to welcoming participants and spectators to this significant event, which promises to be a showcase of skill, tradition, and community unity.
