The Georgia Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage (GAPI) donated $3,500 to support recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread devastation across the southeastern United States, including Georgia.
The hurricane left a trail of destruction, damaging homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure, while displacing thousands of residents. The funds will assist Goodwill of Middle Georgia and the Helms College in repairing its facilities and classrooms, which sustained damage during the storm.
The donation was formally presented by GAPI physicians Dr. Vishal Sharma, Dr. Varsha Kulkarni, and Dr. Sanjeev Kapuria. Dr. Devesh Patel, another contributor, was not present at the event.
“This contribution is a testament to the incredible dedication of these healthcare professionals who not only care for their patients but also step forward to uplift their communities during times of need,” said James Stiff, CEO of Goodwill of Middle Georgia and Helms College.
The funds will support essential repairs that enable Goodwill to continue providing job training, career development, and educational programs. “Together, we can repair, restore, and continue to build lives of individuals and families in our community,” Stiff added.
Dr. Vishal Sharma, president-elect of GAPI for 2024-2025 and a physician at Piedmont Hospital, Augusta, emphasized the association’s commitment to giving back. "As healthcare providers, it is part of our mission to support the communities we serve, especially during times of hardship."
