Hindus for Human Rights, a faith-based organization, has urged Rutgers University to adopt caste protections following the recommendations of its University Task Force on Caste Discrimination. In a statement, the organization called for caste to be added as a protected category in Rutgers’ civil rights policies, following the lead of other institutions like Brown University and California State University.
Caste, a system of social hierarchy and exclusion, exists globally, from the Middle East to West Africa to Latin America. In September 2023, Fresno became the first city in California to ban caste discrimination.
The Task Force’s August 2024 report highlighted the urgent need for such protections to address the harmful effects of caste discrimination, which disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, especially Dalits.
Responding to opposition from some groups claiming caste protections are "Hinduphobic”, Hindus for Human Rights has condemned these arguments as baseless and urged Rutgers to act based on evidence and the Task Force’s findings.
The organization emphasized that caste discrimination is a global issue, not limited to any single religious or ethnic group and that anti-caste policies are essential for creating inclusive campuses.
Drawing from Hindu spiritual teachings, Hindus for Human Rights reaffirmed its commitment to abolishing caste-based oppression and urged the university to implement the Task Force's recommendations to protect vulnerable communities.
