India to chair, host UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in July

India is set to chair and host the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee from July 21-31 in New Delhi, Vishal V Sharma, permanent representative of India to UNESCO, confirmed.
The Indian national capital will be the epicenter of discussions at a global level on heritage preservation. The event will be of great significance to the country’s cultural and historical legacy.
“During the 19th extraordinary session in 2023, the World Heritage Committee determined that its 46th session will be held in India,” read an official statement by UNESCO.
The World Heritage Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defining the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocation of financial assistance upon requests from state parties.
It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List. The committee examines reports on the state of conservation of inscribed properties and asks States Parties to take action when properties are not being properly managed.
In addition, the committee makes decisions on the inscription or deletion of properties on the list of world heritage in danger.
The last (45th) session of the World Heritage Committee was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in September 2023.
