Scholars to converge at Stony Brook University to discuss World Englishes

The event is sponsored by the Mattoo Center for India Studies and the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies.

About 120 scholars from 40 countries will come together at Stony Brook University for the conference themed ‘World Englishes in a Multilingual World.’ The International Association of World Englishes (IAWE) 25th conference will be held from June 15-17, 2023, at the Charles, B. Wang Center, New York. The event is sponsored by the  Mattoo Center for India Studies and the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies.

“The spread of English worldwide has been an unprecedented linguistic phenomenon, and has resulted in there being more non-native speakers than native speakers,” the statement issued by the Association read.

IAWE, founded in 1992, has organized nine of the 24 conferences in the US. The association is an academic society that brings together scholars working in the field of English language, linguistics, literature and cultural studies and convenes conferences in the US and internationally. Its flagship journal, World Englishes, is now in its 43rd year of publication.

Speakers Tobias Bernaisch of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany; Patricia Friedrich of Arizona State University; Nkonko Kamwangamalu of Howard University; and Rajend Mesthrie of the University of Cape Town, South Africa will present their ideas related to World Englishes. A leading world authority on English, and a member of the British Academy, David Crystal of the University of Bangor, Wales, UK, will also address the conference.

Scholars from different countries including India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Namibia, Nigeria, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, and the UK, will attend the conferenc
