The University of Alabama (UA) has named its researcher, M.N.V. Ravi Kumar, as the recipient of the 2025 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Achievement Award.

The SEC Faculty Achievement Awards celebrate faculty members who demonstrate excellence in research, teaching, and service. Kumar, a distinguished university research professor at UA’s College of Community Health Sciences, is renowned for his innovative approaches to translational science, improving the effectiveness of medicines used to treat complex diseases.

“Ravi Kumar’s groundbreaking work in nanomedicine and pharmaceutical sciences has not only advanced global research but also transformed education and innovation at The University of Alabama,” said Jim Dalton, UA executive vice president and provost.

“His leadership in interdisciplinary collaboration, commitment to student success and real-world impact in drug delivery systems make him an outstanding nominee for the 2025 SEC Professor of the Year Award,” Dalton added.

Kumar’s research introduced non-competitive active targeting nanosystems, an innovation that enhances treatments for cancer, lupus, acute kidney injury, and diabetes. He leads research at the Laboratory for Drug Research and Engineering for Advanced Medicine or the Kumar Lab.

His career has spanned multiple SEC institutions, including the University of Kentucky Medical Center and Texas A&M University before joining UA. In 2024, UA’s board of trustees approved the creation of the department of translational science and medicine, where Kumar and his colleagues are advancing research on immuno-inflammatory diseases.

Kumar’s work has earned him several honors, including election as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His latest accolades include the 2024 Global Leader Award from the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the 2021 Humboldt Research Prize.
