The award is given annually to engineering projects that contribute to solving real-world challenges through practical, inclusive technology. Khan’s project was selected from several international submissions for its functionality and potential social impact.
Columbia University described the winning product as an AI-powered system that converts visual input into real-time audio feedback, aiding navigation for visually impaired users. The glasses feature hands-free operation, intuitive controls, and adaptive learning. The university noted the product’s focus on enhancing accessibility, mobility, and independence through practical, user-friendly design.
“Engineering shouldn’t be a privilege for the few. I want to use my skills to help those who can’t see the world—so they can still experience its beauty,” Khan said.
The Milard Chan Technology Challenge encourages innovation among emerging engineers by recognizing technologies that promote accessibility and quality of life.
