The Institute of Applied Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (IAAIR) in Memphis, Tennessee, has appointed Dr Srikanth Thudumu as Director of AI to help drive the establishment’s efforts in advancing AI-driven solutions for societal impact.

Dr Thudumu will lead OpenAG, a groundbreaking initiative designed to democratize agricultural intelligence and create a path toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) for agriculture in the mid-south and across the globe. In a statement, the AI expert said it is an exciting time to be with IAAIR as Memphis is emerging as a center for AI and agriculture.

"Elon Musk’s X.AI supercomputing expansion presents immense possibilities. Memphis has a unique combination of an evolving AI ecosystem and strong industrial sectors, making it an ideal place to implement AI-driven solutions,” Dr Thudumu said. “I look forward to collaborating with IAAIR’s team, working with industry partners, and applying AI to solve societal challenges through initiatives such as OpenAG. By leveraging AI’s full potential, we aim to create a lasting impact that transforms industries and improves lives.”

Jason Fisher, Executive Director of IAAIR, highlighted that Dr Thudumu’s innovative approach and proven expertise make him an invaluable addition to their team and to the southern US as a whole. “We are excited to see how his leadership will drive the OpenAG initiative for societal impact and empower farmers with the critical insights needed for sustainable agricultural practices. His contributions will be instrumental in shaping IAAIR’s broader mission to harness AI for business and community-driven solutions.”

Richard Lackey, Chairman of the World Food Bank, also expressed his support for Dr Thudumu’s appointment. “Dr Thudumu’s expertise in applied AI has the potential to transform global food security. His leadership at IAAIR will be instrumental in harnessing AI for sustainable food production, ensuring smarter resource allocation, and empowering farmers with actionable insights that improve soil health, water cycles, nutrition cycles, and human health.”

Lackey added that as a partner in the OpenAG initiative, they look forward to working alongside Dr Thudumu to drive innovation in agricultural intelligence and food sustainability.

Dr Thudumu has an impressive track record as a Senior Researcher at the Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute (A2I2) at Deakin University, which is Australia’s leading institute for applied AI research.

During his tenure at A2I2, Dr Thudumu supervised PhD students and played a key role in securing funding through collaborative projects with the Australian Department of Defence and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).
