UMich names Neel Sukhatme law school dean

Sukhatme will lead Michigan Law, overseeing academic programs, faculty hiring, research initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The University of Michigan has appointed Neel U. Sukhatme as the new David A. Breach Dean of Law and tenured law professor at its law school.

Confirmed by the board of regents on March 20, Sukhatme is set to begin his five-year tenure from July 1, 2025. He will come to U-M from Georgetown University Law Center, where he has been associate dean for research and academic programs since 2023.

“Professor Sukhatme’s career has been defined by relentless innovation and a consistent dedication to the public good. I am so pleased to welcome him to Michigan,” said Laurie K. McCauley, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. 

“His broad experience and dynamic leadership promises to bring an exciting new chapter for the Law School, where he aims to further elevate the institution’s reputation in legal education and research,” McCauley added. 

Sukhatme expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating, “Michigan Law has a storied tradition of excellence. I am delighted and honored to help lead this incredible community. I look forward to building on the Law School’s many strengths and helping it shape the future of legal education, practice and interdisciplinary collaboration in a time of rapid technological change.” 

A criminology, patent, public, and election law scholar, Sukhatme has published studies in prestigious journals such as the Harvard Law Review and the Duke Law Journal. His studies on criminal disenfranchisement has notably influenced public policy discussions.

Before entering academia, Sukhatme worked as a patent attorney at Latham & Watkins LLP and clerked for federal judges. He is a co-founder of Free Our Vote, a nonprofit dedicated to voting rights, and Spindrop, a music technology AI firm.

Sukhatme obtained a B.S. in computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001, a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2005, and a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 2015.
