Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the pivotal role of every country in ensuring the ethical use of AI during his inaugural address at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit.

The summit, attended by Hiroshi Yoshida of Japan, focused on critical discussions surrounding the global impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Highlighting India’s place as a frontier in AI use and development, Modi underscored the importance of AI in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and education. He said initiatives like the AI chatbot in agriculture and the National Programme on Artificial Intelligence were a testament to the advancement.

Moreover, India’s ‘AI mission’ aims to promote AI applications in various sectors and extend AI skills to tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Modi outlined initiatives such as the “National AI Portal” and the ‘AIRAWAT’ platform, designed to foster collaboration among research labs, industries, and start-ups.

The PM also acknowledged that AI has had an impact on every country, be it small or big and suggested moving forward with caution. “There is no doubt that AI is transformative but it is up to us to make it more and more transparent,” he said.

“Trust on AI will grow only when related ethical, economic and social aspects are addressed,” he added and underlined that the discussion at GPAI Summit will give direction and secure the fundamental roots of humanity.

Delving into the transformative nature of AI, Modi said, “Just as we have agreements and protocols for various international issues, we have to work together to create a global framework for the ethical use of AI. For this, conviction, commitment, coordination, and collaboration are most needed. We have to take such steps together to ensure responsible use of AI.”

He concluded his speech by expressing confidence in the summit's potential to foster collaboration and exchange ideas.
