This event will feature Dhrupad vocals by Mama India, accompanied on Surbahar by Thomas Klepper, and a sitar performance by Avichal Jha.
Avichal Jha is a talented and dedicated sitarist of the Imdad Khan sitar tradition. 7 generations of Imdad Khan's family line have promulgated this "singing style" of sitar and surbahar and now Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is the most notable musician of this style, if not the greatest living sitarist. Avichal is a student of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, and has studied under him for the past 12 years.
Mama India is a phenomenal vocalist hailing from the Dagarbani school of Dhrupad singing. The Dagar family has produced over 30 generations of amazing musicians. Their signature style has been meticulously maintained. Mama India has been a student and disciple of the current generation of Dagars, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, for the past 10 years.
Thomas Klepper Singh is talented, up and coming sitar and surbahar player of the Imdad Khan style who also is a student of Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan. He started studying music at the age of 5 and is now a sitar teacher and performer, based in downtown Los Angeles.
Jyoti Prakash will accompany Avichal Jha on tabla. Jyoti is a prominent tabla artist and teacher based in the Los Angeles area, originally from Kolkata, West Bengal, India.
