The Los Angeles wildfires of January 2025 resulted in significant devastation, and communities are now deeply involved in the recovery process. The wildfires, notably the Eaton fire, which posed a threat to the neighborhood of Altadena and Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, triggered a swift and comprehensive response from the Institute. In addition to expressions of sympathy, Caltech initiated a series of scientific investigations with the goal of understanding and mitigating the fires’ adverse impact.
The Caltech researchers rapidly deployed air quality monitoring devices, collected and analyzed soil and ash samples from the affected regions, developed and refined debris-flow models to assess potential hazards, and examined the post-fire geological responses of the local mountain ranges. Furthermore, Caltech engaged in discussions concerning community resilience and recovery efforts. To share the findings of these investigations, the Caltech Science Exchange has launched a limited-series podcast, ‘After the Fires.’ This platform serves to communicate the scientific insights gained from the wildfires to a wider audience, encouraging informed conversations and contributing to future preparedness.
