A fundraiser has been launched by friends of Bitan Adhikary, a Florida-based IT professional who was killed in the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, to support his grieving wife, three-year-old son, and elderly parents.

Adhikary, who was on vacation in India with his family, was among the 26 civilians killed on Apr.22 when terrorists opened fire in the popular meadow of Baisaran in Pahalgam. His wife and son survived the attack.

The fundraiser, initiated on GoFundMe by close friends in Tampa, where Adhikary lived and worked, is being run on behalf of his wife, Soheni Roy. Titled “In Loving Memory of Bitan Adhikary – Support for his Family”, the campaign aims to raise $300,000 to help the family cope with the financial challenges that lie ahead.

“He was a beloved member of our community and his loss has left a hole in the hearts of all who knew him,” the statement on the campaign page reads. “Bitan was known for his cheerful nature, kindness, and generosity.”

Friends describe Adhikary as the sole breadwinner for his family, responsible for supporting not just his young child and wife, but also his aging parents. “They are now facing the financial burdens of his ongoing mortgage, auto loan, and other unexpected costs,” the statement said.

Organizers clarified that while Roy has not yet been added as a beneficiary on the platform, it is only because she is currently engaged with official procedures and arrangements for Adhikary’s last rites. “We are their friends who stayed with them in Tampa, Florida. We are in touch with Soheni and raised this fundraiser after talking to her,” they added, assuring donors that she would be the sole recipient of the funds.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating in a post on X, “My heart goes out to the families of the victims of the devastating terrorist attack on the tourists in Jammu and Kashmir today… I have talked with his wife over phone… and assured her that my government is taking all steps to bring back his mortal remains to his house at Kolkata.”

Adhikary’s passing has also resonated among his broader social circles. Rev Sports Global, a digital sports company, wrote on X, “Bitan Adhikary from Florida used to join us on every occasion during the T20 WC. This morning, we got to know he was one of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam (Kashmir) terror attacks.”
