Gautam J. Desai has officially taken office as president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), marking a historic first for the organization. Desai, the first Indian American to lead ACOFP, began his one-year term after being installed during the 62nd Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars in Palm Springs, California, according to a statement released by ACOFP on Apr.2.
"I am proud to accept the office of ACOFP president," Dr. Desai said. "Being president during our 75th anniversary year is particularly meaningful to me. In addition to celebrating this milestone, my term will see the launch of a new mentorship program and new resources to promote the profession of osteopathic family medicine. I look forward to working with ACOFP leaders and our members on these and many other initiatives."
An educator and global health advocate, Dr. Desai currently serves as professor of Family Medicine and chair of the Department of Primary Care at Kansas City University. He also directs both the university’s Global Health Program and the Honors Track in Global Medicine.
His academic contributions are also extensive, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications across journals, textbooks, encyclopedias, and digital platforms. Over the past 25 years, he has led medical outreach initiatives and taught in countries including Guatemala, Kenya, the Dominican Republic, India, and China.
Dr. Desai has served on the ACOFP board of governors since 2016 and has chaired several key committees, including the ACOFP 75th Anniversary Task Force, the Annual Convention Work Group, and the Future Leaders Work Group. He holds both fellow and distinguished fellow designations from the organization, reflecting his sustained commitment to advancing osteopathic family medicine.
Dr. Desai earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completing his internship and residency in Osteopathic Family Medicine at Riverside Osteopathic Hospital.
