The Senate Judiciary Committee on Mar.13 voted to advance the nomination of Harmeet Dhillon, founder and CEO of the Center for American Liberty, to the full Senate. A confirmation vote is expected in the coming weeks.

In December 2024, President Donald Trump nominated Dhillon to serve as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. However, Dhillon faced strong opposition from Senate Democrats.

During her confirmation hearing on Feb.26, Dhillon impressed committee members with her extensive litigation experience, spanning three decades, and her record of defending civil liberties, including multiple victories at the U.S. Supreme Court.

After she was moved to the final stage of confirmation on Mar.13, Dhillon’s law firm, Dhillon Law Group, congratulated her on social media, posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“Congratulations to our Managing Partner, Harmeet K. Dhillon! Early today, the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced her nomination to the full Senate for a vote later this month!”

Grassley defends Trump's DOJ nominees

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, defended Dhillon and two other Trump DOJ nominees—John Sauer for Solicitor General and Aaron Reitz for Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy. Grassley dismissed Democratic concerns as politically motivated.

“Each of these nominees is highly qualified for their positions. I spoke about their qualifications at their hearing, and I won’t repeat myself today. I think the President made good choices for these positions, and I’ll support them,” Grassley stated.

He further pushed back against claims that Trump’s attorneys would not follow court orders, arguing, “Let’s review the facts. In the few weeks since he’s been in office, President Trump has been overwhelmed by decisions from individual district judges that encroach on his core constitutional powers.”

He addded that “Trump's administration have worked diligently to abide by those orders, no matter how outrageous, by appealing them and challenging their scope and reach. And the President has been explicit about his views. He’s said, ‘I always abide by the courts, always abide by them. And we’ll appeal.’”

With the committee’s approval, Dhillon’s nomination now moves to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote.
