In a landmark collaboration, the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has joined hands with two premier institutes at Harvard University, USA — The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute and The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability — to host an international conference titled ‘India 2047: Building a Climate Resilient Future’ from Mar.19 to Mar.22, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

The four-day conference will spotlight strategies for climate adaptation and resilience, aiming to shape India’s long-term climate response as it approaches its centenary of Independence in 2047. The event will bring together key stakeholders from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector for in-depth deliberations on policy integration, scientific innovation, and localized adaptation planning.

The inaugural session will be graced by Suman Bery, vice chairperson of NITI Aayog, and Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh. Speakers from Harvard University — including Prof. Tarun Khanna, Prof. Jim Stock, and Prof. Daniel P. Schrag — will join senior officials from the Government of India, global researchers, and industry experts.

Structured around four core themes — Climate Science and its implications on Water & Agriculture, Health, Work, and Built Environment — the conference will feature multiple breakout and technical sessions. These sessions will address critical challenges such as heatwaves, water stress, labor productivity, public health, and urban infrastructure adaptation. Cross-cutting topics like governance, financing, traditional knowledge, livelihoods, skilling, and gender equity will also be explored.

The event aims to generate actionable outcomes including research papers, policy briefs, and technical documents to inform India’s upcoming National Adaptation Plan. It is envisioned as a pivotal platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing scientific evidence to global climate initiatives and strengthening India’s capacity to build a resilient future.
