India has expressed its interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, aiming to bring back several sports that have been removed from the 2026 edition in Glasgow.

If successful in its bid, this would mark the second time the country hosts the prestigious multi-sport event, following the 2010 edition in New Delhi.

The move comes after India's earlier announcement of its intent to bid for the 2036 Olympics, signaling a broader push to establish itself as a global sporting hub. The proposal includes the reinstatement of key sports such as hockey, wrestling, badminton, cricket, and shooting, which were excluded from the 2026 Games due to budgetary constraints. These disciplines have historically contributed significantly to India’s medal tally at the Commonwealth Games, Olympics, and Asian Games.

The 2026 edition in Glasgow is set to feature only 10 disciplines, nine fewer than the previous Games in Birmingham, in an effort to manage costs. The exclusion of sports like wrestling and hockey, where India has traditionally excelled, has raised concerns about the country’s medal prospects.

By proposing to host the 2030 Games and reintegrate the removed disciplines, India aims to ensure strong representation in events that align with its sporting strengths. The country has already initiated discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation regarding its bid.

The last date to bid for the hosting rights is March 31. In the recent past, reports claimed that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) held informal discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) regarding the possibility of hosting the event in 2030. New Delhi and Ahmedabad are being considered to be the main options.

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, 2026. If India secures the hosting rights for 2030, it will join the ranks of nations that have hosted the event multiple times.
