The India Philanthropy Alliance (IPA) has announced the launch of its 6th Annual Youth Essay Competition. The event aims to encourage middle and high school students across the United States to explore solutions to India's most pressing challenges.

Themed #FutureByYou, the 2025 competition invites students to research and write essays on complex issues. Selected entries will be published on the India Giving Day website, spotlighting student voices.

"We believe young people have the ability to think of complex social challenges in new ways and propose innovative solutions," said Alex Counts, executive director of the India Philanthropy Alliance. "This competition reinforces that they have the power to shape India's future through thoughtful analysis and pragmatic ideas."

Entries will be judged in two categories—middle school and high school—by a panel of nonprofit professionals. Winners will present their ideas at a national gathering of philanthropists, business leaders and nonprofit executives in the fall. They will also direct a $1,000 grant to a charity of their choice.

Runners-up will direct $500 grants and have their essays featured on IPA’s platforms. The deadline for submissions is July 1, 2025, with winners notified by late August or early September. IPA will cover travel and accommodation costs for finalists attending the conference.

Past winners include Sia Lakshmi Sampson, who advocated for medical volunteering to strengthen India’s healthcare system, and Nirmal Melam, who wrote about bridging India’s digital divide. The essay competition, first held in 2019, aims to cultivate youth engagement in philanthropy and inspire the next generation of changemakers.
