India has formally raised concerns with the United States government following a noticeable increase in incidents where Hindu temples in the U.S. have been defaced with anti-India graffiti in recent months, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed parliament April 4.

Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, acknowledged the trend, stating that the Indian government places the "highest priority" on the safety and security of its citizens and the Indian community abroad.

According to the Minister, every reported incident of attack or vandalism against temples and places of worship is promptly taken up with the U.S. government through diplomatic channels.

In addition to diplomatic efforts, the management committees of the affected temples and local Indian community associations have registered formal complaints with law enforcement authorities in the United States. These complaints call for thorough investigations, stringent action against those responsible, and enhanced security measures to protect the places of worship.

U.S. law enforcement agencies have responded to these incidents, informing Indian officials that they are investigating these acts of vandalism specifically as hate crimes.

The issue has also drawn attention from American lawmakers. Minister Singh noted that members of the U.S. Congress have urged relevant security agencies to develop a more comprehensive strategy to combat hate crimes targeting the Hindu community within the United States.

The Indian government continues to monitor the situation and engage with U.S. authorities to ensure the well-being and security of the Indian diaspora and their religious institutions
