A Nice Indian Boy, an Indian-American romcom, is set to premiere in theaters across the United States on Apr.4. Based on the acclaimed play by Madhuri Shekar, the film adaptation promises a fresh take on the complexities of tradition and modern relationships within the South Asian diaspora.
Directed by Roshan Sethi, the film stars Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff as an unconventional couple navigating the expectations of a traditional Indian family. Soni, best known for his roles as Dopinder in Deadpool and Pavitr Prabhakar (Spider-Man India) in Across the Spider-Verse, brings his signature wit and charm to the lead role. Groff, widely recognized for his portrayal of King George III in Hamilton, has built an impressive career spanning film, television, and theater, with standout roles in The Matrix Resurrections, Mindhunter, Glee, and Frozen.
The ensemble cast also includes Sunita Mani, comedian Zarna Garg, and veteran actor Harish Patel (Eternals). The screenplay, penned by Eric Randall, marks the television writer’s first foray into feature films. Randall, who has previously worked on Bones, drew inspiration from his own experiences as a gay man from a religious background, mirroring some of the film’s central themes.
The film marks Roshan Sethi's second collaboration with Karan Soni, following their 2021 indie hit 7 Days.
The film also highlights Madhuri Shekar’s expanding influence in the entertainment industry. Known for her work on Netflix’s Three-Body Problem, Amazon’s Evil Eye, and HBO’s The Nevers, Shekar’s original stage play has been lauded for its sharp writing and emotional depth, qualities that are expected to translate seamlessly onto the screen.
