Indian Americans mourn passing of Pope Francis

Pope Francis passed away in Rome due to complications from chronic lung issues and double pneumonia.

Indian American leaders have expressed their grief and reflection following the passing of Pope Francis. They have praised his lasting dedication to humility, compassion, and social justice.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08) emphasized the Pope's universal appeal, stating, "Pope Francis led with humility, compassion, and courage—transcending borders and faiths in his call to serve the least among us. May Catholics and all who mourn his passing take comfort in knowing his legacy of peace and justice will endure. May he rest in eternal peace."​

Representative from Virginia, Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) expressed his sorrow, noting, "I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. He was a great leader—known for his compassion, humility, and outreach. His life of action has been a source of hope, and he leaves behind a legacy of integrity and purpose that will continue to inspire many for years to come."​



Michigan State Representative Shri Thanedar (MI-13) described the Pope as "a visionary leader who inspired billions with his tireless dedication to kindness and justice for all.”



Senator Gazala Hashmi from Virginia’s 15th Senatorial District reflected, “He spoke often for those without voice or power. His humility and kindness serve as examples of moral leadership.”



Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla reflected, "Pope Francis' passing is a reminder of the power of kindness and humility. His work to bring people together across divides will leave an enduring legacy of compassion. May his memory continue to inspire change for the better. Rest in peace."​

New York State Assemblywoman Jennifer Rajkumar emphasized the Pope’s impact on diverse communities, writing, “In NYC, where every faith and every struggle lives side by side, his message of compassion rang loud. He stood with the poor, the displaced, the forgotten.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away in Rome due to complications from chronic lung issues and double pneumonia. His 12-year papacy was marked by efforts to modernize the Catholic Church, advocate for the marginalized, and promote interfaith dialogue. 

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis's body will lie in state at St. Peter's Basilica, with funeral rites to follow.
