Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, during an address to the Indian diaspora in Boston on Apr.20, presented a critique of what he described as an “assault” on India’s pluralistic foundation. “There is a full-scale assault taking place on our democratic system, on our institutional framework,” he said. “Different castes, different religions, different languages are being attacked by one central ideology.”
He added that the ruling BJP “barely escaped” being unable to form a government in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Describing the outcome as a sign of a deeper ideological battle, he framed the contest as one between “two ideas of India”.
