India’s deputy consul general in NY bids farewell: "A roller coaster I’d ride again"

Dr Varun Jeph's tenure in NY has been defined by the remarkable growth of the Indian diaspora, the strengthening of India-U.S. trade relations, and the expansion of Indian heritage and culture.

In a heartfelt farewell speech on Mar.28, India’s outgoing Deputy Consul General in New York Dr Varun Jeph reflected on his time in the Big Apple. Jeph recalled the challenges he faced upon arrival. “I vividly remember when we landed in New York, the Big Apple, and it was just coming out of COVID. This was the epicenter of the pandemic. It was also the day that Cyclone Ida had hit New York and the region around it. It was a pretty ominous start to the stint for us.”

Despite the initial uncertainty, he described his tenure as one of deep fulfillment and satisfaction. “It was dark, it was pouring like anything, the phones were ringing, the emergency messages were coming, and we really weren’t sure. We were wondering whether this was indicative of what our tenure would be like—something full of turmoil, something that would be like a roller coaster. And a roller coaster it indeed has been, but one that I would really like to ride again at some point in my career.”
