The Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington (JSMW) has raised an undisclosed amount of funds during its Patrika Lekhan event on Mar.15 and Mar.16. The funds will support the Pratishtha Mahotsav (inauguration ceremony) of JSMW’s new Jain Temple in Beltsville, Maryland, scheduled for May.31 to Jun.1.
Despite being a small group of about 700 families, JSMW members showed extraordinary dedication in coming together for the fundraising event.
“The energy in the room was electrifying,” said Vishal Mehta, President of JSMW. “We are a small community, but our unity and commitment to Jain principles drive us to achieve the impossible. This temple is not just a structure; it is a legacy of faith, culture, and compassion that will serve generations to come.”
Every detail of the new temple—from the intricately carved murtis (idols) of revered Tirthankars to the peaceful meditation spaces—is designed to promote inner peace and spiritual growth.
The grand celebrations of the inauguration of the new temple will begin on May.23 with the Utthapan and Varghodo ceremony, followed by pre-Pratishtha rituals from May.24 to May.30. The festivities will conclude with the Pratishtha Mahotsav on May.31 and June.1, uniting the community in devotion and joy. Beyond being a place of worship, the temple will also serve as a center for learning.
“With a dedicated Pathshala, we are ensuring that young Jains have a space to learn and carry forward the timeless teachings of Jain philosophy for generations to come,” said Dr. Gita Shah, chairperson of JSMW’s Board of Trustees.
