Las Vegas proclaims March 13 as Attukal Pongala day

The proclamation acknowledges the Hindu and Jain Temple of Las Vegas for its role in fostering cultural enrichment and interfaith harmony.

The City of Las Vegas has officially recognized the Attukal Pongala Festival, an ancient Hindu celebration dedicated to Devi Bhagavathy, with a proclamation issued by Mayor Shelley Berkley. 

The proclamation designates March 13, as "Attukal Pongala Festival Day" in Las Vegas and recognizes the contributions of the Hindu and Jain communities in the city.

Attukal Pongala, celebrated predominantly in Kerala, India, is one of the world’s largest gatherings of women. Each year, millions of devotees converge at the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram to offer Pongala, a ritualistic dish of rice, jaggery, and coconut, cooked in earthen pots as an offering to the Goddess Bhagavathy. The festival symbolizes devotion, empowerment, and the divine feminine energy, attracting women of all backgrounds.

The proclamation acknowledges the Hindu and Jain Temple of Las Vegas for its role in fostering cultural enrichment and interfaith harmony. Since its establishment in 2001, the temple has served as a cornerstone for the spiritual and moral growth of the Hindu and Jain communities in Nevada. 

"The temple provides a place for future generations to understand and appreciate Hinduism and Sanatana Dharma while preserving Indian culture through traditional celebrations," the proclamation states. "We extend our deepest gratitude to the temple’s leadership, volunteers, and devotees for their unwavering commitment to fostering understanding, tolerance, and unity within our diverse community."

The 2025 Attukal Pongala Festival in Kerala is expected to witness an estimated 2 to 3 million women gathering in the streets of Thiruvananthapuram, making it one of the world’s largest religious congregations.
