Ohio State names Sanjay Krishna Innovator of the Year
He was honored for pioneering infrared technologies and transforming university research into market-ready innovations.

Ohio State University has named Indian American professor Sanjay Krishna as its 2025 Innovator of the Year.
The announcement was made during the annual Research and Innovation Showcase hosted by the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge.

Krishna, who holds the George R. Smith chair in the College of Engineering, was recognized for his groundbreaking work in infrared detector technologies and his commitment to translating research into real-world applications. He is also the co-founder and chief technical officer of SK Infrared, a startup focused on defense, aerospace, and commercial uses of infrared imaging.
“It’s really humbling to be named Ohio State Innovator of the Year. It really captures the sense of what I’m trying to do. It’s innovation as a professor – to use the science to train the next generation of students and thought leaders and as an entrepreneur – to be able to take that innovation into the marketplace. This is the best job to have,” Krishna said in a video presented at the event.
He highlighted the collaborative nature of his success, thanking colleagues, students, and his family, noting, “It takes a village to make an innovator.”
The Innovator of the Year award honors Ohio State researchers actively advancing the commercialization of university intellectual property through patents, licensing, and startup formation.
Krishna’s lab is developing next-generation infrared detectors, arrays, and imagers that hold promise across a wide range of industries. He emphasized that the award represents decades of effort and many contributors.
