Preeti Shankar joins Joyce Foundation as environment program officer

An Indian-origin professional, she brings over a decade of experience in urban sustainability, water issues, environmental justice, and applied research.

The Joyce Foundation has appointed Preeti Shankar as its new environment program officer, where she will oversee grants related to the Great Lakes and drinking water portfolio. 

With over a decade of experience in urban sustainability, water issues, environmental justice, and applied research, Shankar brings valuable expertise to the Foundation.

Shankar expressed her excitement about the new role on LinkedIn, stating, “I’m thrilled to join the incredible Environment team at the Joyce Foundation as a Program Officer, supporting the foundation's Great Lakes and drinking water portfolio.”

Before joining The Joyce Foundation, Shankar served as the managing director of the Urban Analytics team at the Center for Neighborhood Technology. In this role, she focused on addressing environmental inequities in Chicago communities through a data-driven approach that combined qualitative and quantitative methods. 

Shankar’s work helped develop advocacy tools to expose policy failures and support community-driven solutions, and she successfully collaborated with community organizations, city departments, and academic institutions to tackle environmental challenges.

She has also held positions as a transportation planner, planning intern, and junior architect in both the United States and India.

Shankar holds a master’s degree in urban planning from Texas A&M University and a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Visvesvaraya Technological University in India. Her professional background spans urban planning and architecture, with experience in both the United States and India.

Fluent in English, Hindi, and Kannada, Shankar grew up in India and has called Chicago home since 2012.

The Joyce Foundation, based in Chicago, is a private, nonpartisan organization committed to advancing racial equity and economic mobility through evidence-based public policies and strategies in the Great Lakes region. Shankar’s appointment marks an exciting step in the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to address critical environmental issues in the region.
