Giani Raghbir Singh, a prominent Sikh leader, publicly criticized Air India for substandard conditions and alleged misconduct by airline employees on a scheduled international flight.

Chief Granthi of Sri Harmandar Sahib, Singh was scheduled to travel from New Delhi to San Francisco on Air India flight AI183 to attend a religious event in Sacramento, California. Despite holding business class tickets, Singh Sahib said he and others were met with “extremely poor” seating conditions and unhygienic surroundings.

In a statement posted on Facebook, he alleged that when passengers raised objections, Air India staff behaved inappropriately. “I, along with some other passengers, came off the plane in protest and sat outside near the terminal immigration checkpoint,” he wrote, adding that the flight captain was respectful but the staff were not.

Singh further claimed that immigration officials confiscated their passports and that they had not received their luggage or assistance from airline representatives for over three hours. “We have been sitting hungry and thirsty… This treatment is utterly disgraceful,” he wrote.

The incident follows a pattern of recent complaints against Air India’s premium services. Earlier this year, India’s Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Aam Aadmi Party’s Goa president Amit Palekar both flagged serious issues with broken seats and lack of accountability in business class.

As of now, Air India has not issued an official response to Singh Sahib’s allegations. The airline, owned by the Tata Group, has faced mounting scrutiny over its service quality since rejoining the conglomerate in 2022.
