Syracuse honors professor Shikha Nangia for faculty excellence

She was honored along with Benjamin Dotger for their outstanding contributions.

Syracuse University has honored Shikha Nangia with the Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction Award at the One University Awards Ceremony. 

The award highlights Nangia’s contributions to biomedical research, particularly in drug delivery and nanomedicine.

The award is part of the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence, which recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions in four overarching categories- scholarly achievement, excellence in teaching, commitment to students, and dedicated service to the university and community.

Nangia, the chair of the biomedical and chemical engineering department, leads a research group focused on overcoming challenges related to the blood-brain barrier. Her work employs computational techniques to enhance drug transport across the barrier, a critical step in developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Her project was funded through the NSF-CAREER award.

Beyond neurological disorders, Nangia’s research extends to computational modeling of nanomaterials, including targeted drug delivery carriers for cancer treatment. Her team is developing quantitative approaches to analyze interactions between nanoscale drug carriers and biological systems, aiming to design efficient, safe, and targeted therapies.

Nangia has also been recognized for her commitment to education. She has received numerous honors, including the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education and the Meredith Teaching Recognition Award. She teaches courses such as statistical thermodynamics, multiscale computational methods and reaction kinetics.

 Nangia holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, an M.Sc. from IIT Delhi, and a B.Sc. from the University of Delhi.
