Top US Democrats, joined by Congressional colleagues across party lines, have strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of at least 26 civilians, mostly tourists, on Apr.22.
Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries described the attack as a “senseless act of terror”, offering condolences to the victims and their loved ones.
“I am horrified by the senseless act of terror targeting civilians on Apr. 22 in Kashmir. I join the world in prayer for the victims and their families during this incredibly painful time,” Jeffries said in a statement. “Everyone responsible for this despicable attack must be held accountable. The people of India have my full support as the nation grapples with this horrific tragedy.”
His sentiments were shared by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who called the assault a “revolting attack”.
“My heart breaks for the innocent tourists and locals murdered by terrorists in the revolting attack in Kashmir, and I wish a speedy recovery for the injured,” Schumer said. “There can be no tolerance for the hatred that breeds this kind of unjustifiable violence.”
In a rare bipartisan moment, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee–Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Adam Smith issued a joint statement denouncing the attack and reiterating the US commitment to its partnership with India.
“We stand in solidarity with our Indian partners in condemning the appalling terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that targeted innocent civilians, including tourists, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 26 people,” their statement read.
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the people of India during this difficult time,” they added.
Highlighting the growing strategic ties between India and the United States, Rogers and Smith reaffirmed the importance of continued cooperation in addressing global terrorism and ensuring peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
“India is a vital partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Our countries have made great strides in cooperation to: counter terrorism, preserve the rules-based international order, and strengthen stability. We should continue to work together to ensure those who violently attack civilians are brought to justice and that our countries remain secure, free, and prosperous,” the statement said.
