The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) has named Shreerekha Pillai as the next dean of its College of Arts and Sciences.
A seasoned academic leader, Pillai brings over 30 years of experience in higher education. She currently serves as associate dean at the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Human Sciences and Humanities, where she has led initiatives in curriculum development, academic programming, and faculty support.

Pillai is also known for her long-term involvement in the Transforming Lives by Degrees program, which brings humanities education to incarcerated individuals in Texas.
At UNCP, she plans to advance interdisciplinary collaboration, foster community partnerships, and support the professional development of faculty and students.
Provost Diane Prusank welcomed Pillai’s appointment stating, “Her inclusive leadership style and belief in the power of education make her an ideal fit for UNC Pembroke. We are thrilled to welcome her and look forward to the meaningful impact she will make on our campus and in our broader community.”
Expressing enthusiasm for her new role, Pillai said, “I am excited to learn from the vibrant community at UNCP and work together to build on the strong foundation of the college. UNC Pembroke students are deeply engaged, and I look forward to being part of their academic journey. I want to create spaces for community-building and professional development — and celebrate the achievements that define our academic journeys.”
A first-generation immigrant from India, Pillai holds a dual honors degree in literature and creative writing from the University of Michigan, an MFA from Syracuse University, and a PhD in comparative literature from Rutgers University.
