UPitt names Senthil Sadhasivam as anesthesiology chair

Sadhasivam’s research in opioid pharmacogenetics and personalized pain management has received widespread recognition.

The University of Pittsburgh has announced the appointment of Senthil Sadhasivam as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) endowed chair in anesthesiology research excellence, effective March 1, 2025. 

Endowed faculty positions at the university are awarded to scholars who have demonstrated national and international excellence in their fields.  Sadhasivam was recognized for his outstanding contributions to anesthesiology research, clinical quality, and patient safety.

Sadhasivam, who has serves as executive vice chair for clinical quality, patient safety, and clinical research in the department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine since 2021, will continue in this role alongside his new appointment.

Under Sadhasivam’s leadership, the department has seen significant growth in NIH grant submissions, reinforcing its status as a leading anesthesiology research institution. He also serves as associate dean for perioperative research, director of perioperative research, and director of the perioperative genomics program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

A global expert in perioperative pain management, Sadhasivam’s research in opioid pharmacogenetics and personalized pain management has received widespread recognition. He currently leads multiple NIH-funded studies on opioid use disorder in pregnancy and postoperative opioid safety. Beyond academia, he is the founder and chief medical officer of OpalGenix, advancing the clinical application of opioid pharmacogenetics.

With over 200 peer-reviewed publications and 230 national and international presentations, Sadhasivam continues to be a prolific educator and researcher. He earned his MBA from Indiana University Kelley School of Business, an MPH from Harvard School of Public Health, and completed anesthesiology residencies at AIIMS, Harvard Medical School, and Thanjavur Medical College.
