Yale cardiologists lead balloon-assisted heart surgery

The Indian-origin doctors led a team for the BATMAN procedure, a new transcatheter technique that uses a balloon to treat patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) who are not candidates for traditional procedures.

In a landmark medical achievement, Dr. Amit Vora and Dr. Prashanth Vallabhajosyula of Yale New Haven Hospital successfully performed Connecticut’s first BATMAN procedure (Balloon-Assisted Translocation of the Mitral Anterior Leaflet), marking a major advancement in the treatment of complex mitral valve disease.

The innovative treatment was led by Dr. Vora, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular Medicine), Dr. Vallabhajosyula, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Surgery and Surgical Director of the Aortic Institute, Samuel Reinhardt, MD, and John Forrest, MD, director of the Structural Heart Program.

The BATMAN procedure is a novel transcatheter approach that reshapes or repositions the anterior mitral leaflet using balloon assistance, enhancing leaflet coaptation and reducing mitral regurgitation. Unlike traditional interventions such as MitraClip or transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR), BATMAN is explicitly designed to address anatomical complexities that have previously limited treatment options.

“The Yale team’s successful execution of this advanced treatment underscores our commitment to pioneering cardiac care as an academic health system,” said Eric Velazquez, MD, chief of cardiovascular medicine at Yale and physician-in-chief of the Heart and Vascular Center.

This treatment is meant for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR), particularly those with complex anatomical challenges or comorbid conditions that make traditional surgery or standard transcatheter interventions unfeasible.

Dr. Nita Ahuja, MD, MBA, FACS, chair of the Department of Surgery at Yale School of Medicine and chief of Surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, praised the collaborative effort. She said, “This milestone highlights the collaborative efforts of our multidisciplinary team and our focus on delivering innovative solutions to improve patient outcomes.”
