12-year-old spearheads e-waste collection drive in Florida

At the young age of 12, Anya Gupta is making waves as a determined advocate on a mission to protect our planet. She has taken up the cause of addressing E-Waste pollution, actively mobilizing cities in Florida to adopt sustainable practices for tech disposal.
Boca Raton proclaimed October 14 as E-Waste Day in response to Anya's E-Waste Collection Drive, which successfully gathered over 1000 pounds of electronic waste. This initiative has also inspired other cities, such as Miami Beach and Stuart, to follow suit and designate October 14th as Electronic Waste Recycling Day.
Upon recognizing the significant environmental repercussions of E-Waste, particularly its adverse effects on marine life, Gupta took the initiative to establish the E-Waste Revolution movement. “I realized that while plastic and pollution are discussed, the environmental threats from electronics aren't. I wanted to change that,” she said.
At the age of 5, she founded the nonprofit organization called ‘Pennies for Penguins,’ dedicated to penguin conservation. Over the years, her endeavours have extended to include the ‘Cup Revolution,’ a campaign aimed at combating plastic straw waste, which has successfully mobilized youth on a global scale.
On October 14, the Village of Palmetto Bay in Miami will pay tribute to Gupta's remarkable efforts with a special ceremony and a citywide event held in recognition of E-Waste Day. “You are wise beyond your years. We would be honoured to recognize E-Waste Day on October 14th,” commended Mayor Karyn Cunningham.
Established in 2023, the GLCS Youth Leadership Council, led by Gupta in her role as president, has a primary mission to foster environmental awareness, particularly among young individuals. John Holloway, President of Coastal Stewards, said, “We are beyond proud of our Youth Leadership Council. The future solutions lie in what kids like Anya have experienced and believe to be important. We aim to activate them for wildlife conservation.”
