Bollywood Insider lists out a dozen films which could redefine Hindi cinema in technique and storytelling

FIGHTER

Siddharth Anand’s spy thriller Pathaan got 2023 off to a Iflying start. Twelve months later, the director is hoping to recreate the magic with Fighter, featuring Deepika and Hrithik Roshan as Squadron Leaders and Anil Kapoor as Group Captain. 

KALKI2898 AD

Helmed by Nag Ashwin, this VFX-heavy sci-fi adventure unveils in a futuristic world with Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan as warriors engaged in battle. Also featuring Kamal Haasan in a cross-pollination of North South talent, this release can be India’s answer to Star Wars.

LOVE SEX AND DHOKA 2

The sequel of the 2010 original is a cult film is about love in the times of the internet and highlights the dangers of social media addiction through its unique brand of unconventional storytelling.

STREE 2

Six years after the blockbuster Stree, a sequel to the horror-comedy returns to the theatres on August 31. Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek Bannerjee will now be plagued by a headless man and looking to their resident witch to protect them. The Horror -comedy franchise will see sequels galore this year.

SINGHAM AGAIN

While on hit franchises, Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again brings back the khaki brigade of Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh, with Kareena Kapoor and Deepika Padukone giving them company. Part 3 is reportedly a remake of the Tamil film S3 and battles an international crime corporation that buries lethal toxic medical waste in India. 

LAAPATAA LADIES

March 1 will mark the comeback of Aamir Khan as producer. Revolving around two young brides in rural India who get swapped because of their identical build, marital attire and veils. This life-changing journey from maika to sasural is about women going beyond their defined social roles and responsibilities to bond with each other.

JIGRA

If there is an actress who has proved that she can carry a film on her frail shoulders, it is Alia Bhatt. After Darlings, a dark comedy around an abusive husband, the actress now breaks Into the action genre with a gritty drama around a jail break.

CHANDU CHAMPION

After ’83, Kabir Khan helms another sports drama with Kartik Aryan playing war hero Murlikant Petkar who survived nine bullet injuries to become India’s first Paralympics gold medalist. The success of such films could bring inspirational stories of more sportspersons to the screen.

CHAAVA

Now, it’s Vicky Kaushal’s turn to reign as Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Laxman Utekar’s period epic unveiling on December 6. Chaava is touted as Vicky’s first big solo release and if it makes box-office history, it would be a definite boost for not just the National Award-winning actor, but also the genre.

EMERGENCY

In an election year, Kangana Ranaut who is expected to run for a seat on a BJP ticket will be reliving a contentious and controversial chapter in India’s political history as our former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The actress has produced and directed the film herself and if the biographical historical drama finds favour with the masses, it could foster more such films that can become propaganda tools for political parties to solicit votes.

TEHRAN

John Abraham  now brings to the screen the Russian-Ukraine war and the role of Iran, Palestine and China in the on-going crisis. The film could flag off the trend of geopolitical thrillers.

PUSHPA 2: THE RULE

Pushpa: The Rise brought people back to the theatres not just in the South, but also proved a savior for Hindi cinema, turning Allu Arjun into a National Award-winning, Pan-India superstar. Naturally then, there arehuge expectations around the sequel, Pushpa2: The Rule, set to explode on Independence Day.
