CEO of Cognizant and the 2025 recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, Ravi Kumar S underscored the vital role of the Indian diaspora in India’s ongoing transformation.
Sharing his thoughts on receiving the award, which is the highest honor given to overseas Indians by the Government of India, Kumar stated, "This is a powerful reminder of a shared responsibility to strengthen the bridge between India and the world."
Kumar also focused on the broader influence of the Indian diaspora, which he described as a significant force in global leadership. "With 10 percent of Fortune 500 companies led by individuals of Indian origin, the diaspora's impact spans technology, culture, and economic development," he said.
He emphasized the importance of initiatives such as Viksit Bharat 2047, which aims to transform India into a developed nation by its centenary of independence and urged the Diaspora's contribution to them.
Discussing the importance of skilling, Kumar called for enhanced public-private partnerships to prepare India's talent for global industry demands. "Programs like Cognizant Synapse and apprenticeships are critical in making our talent industry-ready," he added.
The Odisha-native also welcomed the decision to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention in the state and reflected on its evolution from an agrarian economy to a hub for industries like steel, aluminum, power, and IT services. "Odisha's journey is a testament to the potential of regional development, with cities like Bhubaneswar becoming centers of innovation and growth," he remarked.
Kumar concluded by urging the diaspora to engage in India’s growth story, particularly in underdeveloped regions. "The government's efforts to increase per capita in the eastern region is a key initiative where the diaspora can help, by improving literacy, infrastructure, and fostering economic partnerships," he noted.
