Accused who planned to attack US consulate in Chennai held by NIA

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) – a specialized counter-terrorism law enforcement agency in India – on May.15 arrested an absconding individual suspected of plotting an explosion attack targeting the US Consulate in Chennai and Israel embassy in Bengaluru. The arrest took place at a hideout in Mysuru.
Nuruddin, also known as Rafi, had a cash reward of almost $6,000 (Rs 5 lakh) on his head since he went into hiding after being released on bail with strict conditions in August 2023.
Nuruddin, who had been declared a proclaimed offender after failing to appear before the NIA Special Court in Chennai, was apprehended by an NIA team in the Rajiv Nagar area. During the search of his hideout, the team seized mobile phones, a laptop, pen drives, and a drone.
Nuruddin was arrested in connection with a terror conspiracy case registered in Hyderabad. He, along with Sri Lankan national Muhammed Sakir Hussain and Amir Zubair Siddique, a Pakistani national employed at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka, had conspired to carry out explosions at the US Consulate in Chennai and the Israel Embassy in Bengaluru back in 2014.
Nuruddin was implicated in financing anti-national espionage activities using counterfeit Indian currency notes, allegedly at the direction of the accused Pakistani national. The trial against Nuruddin, which had been halted due to his absconding, will now resume, according to the NIA.
