Sikh organizations across the United States have condemned the Civics Alliance’s ‘American Birthright’ model social studies standards in schools for their offensive framing of Sikhs and Sikhi. In an open letter dated Mar.21, gurdwaras, Sikh advocacy groups, and academics have demanded the removal of a reference to “Sikh terror” in the curriculum, calling it harmful and misleading.

The controversial phrase appears in the model standards under a directive for 10th-grade students to “describe the history of independent India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka”. Sikh leaders argue that this framing misrepresents their faith and community, particularly in light of the discrimination and violence Sikhs have faced in the United States, especially after 9/11.
