Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his country’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system in Mauritius and Sri Lanka in the presence of Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The leaders were joined by Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das at the virtual launch. The expansion follows the successful implementation of UPI in France earlier this year.

In Colombo UPI transactions were facilitated by NPCI International Payments Limited and LankaPay - the country’s national payment network, while in Mauritius, the Bank of Mauritius initiated the launch of RuPay cards and UPI payment system.

Taking to X, the Sri Lankan President’s office highlighted the impact of UPI transactions, connecting Sri Lanka with Tamil Nadu and Mumbai. This move is expected to benefit over 400,000 merchants. “Recent discussions with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar show promising progress and collaboration with Mauritius further enhancing connectivity efforts,” the office added in the post.

Wickremesinghe’s statement further emphasized that UPI aligns with the 'Vision Statement' unveiled during his official visit to India, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties and benefit businesses in both countries.

Mauritius PM Jugnauth echoed his enthusiasm on X, stating, "Honoured to have e-launched the RuPay Card and UPI projects alongside Shri Narendra Modi Ji and His Excellency Ranil Wickremesinghe. A solid financial facilitator to make people-to-people contacts and businesses thrive."
