Air India expands codeshare partnerships with Lufthansa Group and Virgin Australia
The agreement adds nearly 60 new routes, expanding connectivity to Indian, European, and American cities, along with destinations in Australia and New Zealand.

Air India has announced a significant expansion of its codeshare agreements with Lufthansa Group and a new partnership with Virgin Australia, further strengthening its global connectivity.
The enhanced partnership with Lufthansa Group will see Air India collaborate with Austrian Airlines for the first time while expanding existing codeshare agreements with Lufthansa and SWISS. This expansion adds nearly 60 new codeshare routes, increasing the total number of shared routes to approximately 100. The partnership now covers 12 Indian and 26 European cities, improving travel options for passengers flying between India and Europe.
As part of the agreement, Air India’s ‘AI’ designator code will be placed on Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines flights across key European destinations. In return, Lufthansa Group carriers will add their codes to Air India’s domestic flights to 15 Indian cities and international flights to Kathmandu, Melbourne, and Sydney. The expanded partnership also offers increased flight options between India and Germany/Switzerland, providing greater flexibility for travelers.
Air India has also announced a new codeshare partnership with Virgin Australia, enhancing connectivity between India, Australia, and New Zealand. Under this unilateral agreement, Air India will place its ‘AI’ code on Virgin Australia flights to 16 cities, including Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Queenstown. This partnership allows seamless connections for passengers traveling from Delhi to Melbourne or Sydney, ensuring baggage check-through on a single ticket.
Nipun Aggarwal, chief commercial officer of Air India, emphasized the importance of these partnerships, stating that they align with the airline’s vision of offering greater global accessibility. Subject to regulatory approvals, the codeshare flights will progressively become available for booking, reinforcing Air India’s commitment to enhancing its international network.
