British Indian medic, Ajay Kumar Kakkar has been conferred the Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter honor by United Kingdom’s King Charles III on Apr.23.
The new set of royal honors bestowed recognition upon distinguished individuals from various spheres of British society. These personal honors are made by the monarch, without prime ministerial advice as is the case with other annual royal honours.
Kakkar, 59, a revered figure in the medical community, has been selected for his exceptional contributions to healthcare and public service. His appointment to one of the oldest ceremonial orders underscores his unwavering commitment to excellence and service to the nation.
The announcement, issued by Buckingham Palace, outlined Kakkar's illustrious career trajectory. Trained in medicine at King’s College London and holding a PhD from Imperial College London, Kakkar dedicated his professional life to the prevention and treatment of venous and arterial thromboembolic disease, as well as cancer-associated thrombosis.
In addition to his clinical work, Kakkar holds key leadership positions within prestigious healthcare institutions. He serves as president of the Thrombosis Research Institute, chairman of King’s Health Partners, and chairman of The King’s Fund, a charitable healthcare organization.
His extensive involvement in advancing medical research and healthcare policy has earned him widespread recognition and respect within the field. He was previously appointed as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours.
Alongside Lord Kakkar, other notable appointments were announced, including composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Air Chief Marshal the Lord Stuart William Peach. The annual celebration of the Order of the Garter, marked by a grand procession and service, is set to take place at St. George’s Chapel.
