Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light has been nominated as a contender for the inaugural Aruna Vasudev Award for Best Asia Pacific Film, presented by Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema (NETPAC).

The winner will be announced at the 31st edition of the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema (VIFICA) in Vesoul, France, on Feb. 18. The festival is organized by the International Festival of Asian Cinema Association, which seeks to promote Asian cinema and raise awareness of the city of Vesoul, the Haute-Saône department, and the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The festival is also a member of NETPAC.

The India-European co-produced movie has been selected from a highly competitive field of over 600 films screened in 2024, underscoring the diversity and evolution of contemporary Asian and Pacific cinema.

Other four movies competing alongside Kapadia’s work are Mahdi Fleifel’s To A Land Unknown (Palestine-Denmark), Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April (Georgia-France-Italy), Lan Pham Ngoc’s Cu Li Never Cries (Vietnam-Philippines-France-Singapore-Norway), and My Favorite Cake by Iranian filmmakers Behtash Sanaie Ha and Maryam Moghadam.

The award is dedicated to the memory of Aruna Vasudev, a distinguished advocate for Asian cinema who established NETPAC in 1989 and founded Cinemaya, the first pan-Asian film quarterly.

Vasudev played a pivotal role in promoting Asian films on the international stage, serving on juries at prestigious festivals including Cannes, Locarno, and Karlovy Vary. Her contributions to cinema scholarship include the authorship of notable works such as The New Indian Cinema and Being & Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia. She passed away in 2024.

The 2024 movie, All We Imagine as Light, has won major awards, including the Grand Prix at Cannes 2024, the RTVE-Another Look Award at San Sebastián, and Best Foreign Language Film from the National Society of Film Critics.

It was also named Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and won the Silver Hugo Jury Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival. The film received additional honors at the Tasveer Film Festival and Phoenix Critics Circle.

Nominations include Best Film Not in the English Language at the BAFTA 2025 and Best Foreign Language Film at the Critics Choice Awards 2025
